With Memorial Day coming up this Monday, we here at GAN Conferencing would like to thank our troops at home and abroad for fighting to protect our freedoms. We would also like to take this time talk a little bit about the history of Memorial Day. For example, did you know that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day?
Decoration Day was started in the late 1860’s by a few small towns across the nation. In 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York the birthplace of Memorial Day. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to make Memorial Day the last Monday in May. This was done to create a three day weekend for federal employees. Memorial Day is often celebrated by a parade featuring current and former military personnel.
On a lighter note, Memorial Day is also seen as the official start of summer in many places. This is why there are so many barbeques and pool parties over the weekend. Please comment below with what you are going to be doing with your long weekend. Also please remember to have a happy and safe memorial day.
